Pune, 2nd November 2022: Citizens in general, and cyclists in particular, have reacted negatively to police commissioner Amitabh Gupta’s recommendation to remove cycle tracks to relieve congestion on city roads. Objecting vehemently to the top cop’s remarks, activists claim that the city police lack knowledge of the transportation system because they are not given training in sustainable traffic development and planning.

On October 27, the police commissioner sent a letter to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Commissioner Vikram Kumar recommending the removal of unused/unnecessary cycle tracks and the opening of bus rapid transit (BRT) routes to all vehicles to increase road carriage capacity.
