Pune Traffic Police Book 208 Drunk Drivers During New Year Celebrations
Pune, 2nd January 2026: The Pune City Traffic Department carried out a special drive against drunk driving over the New Year period, resulting in 208 motorists being booked for driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said.
The operation ran from 11:00 pm on December 31, 2025, to 5:00 am on January 1, 2026, covering 40 checkpoints across the city. During this period:
-2,128 vehicles were inspected
-51 vehicles were impounded for various traffic violations
-Rs 70,400 was collected in fines from violators
In addition to the New Year night drive, the traffic department conducted nightly checks from December 24 to 31, 2025, between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am, across 30 traffic divisions in Pune. These operations led to 486 cases of drunk driving under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
For the entire year of 2025 (January 1 to December 31), the Pune City Traffic Department recorded 6,765 cases of drunk driving, all of which have been filed in court under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Himat Jadhav, urged citizens to follow traffic rules strictly, highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence. “Drunk driving is a serious offence that significantly increases the risk of accidents. Following traffic regulations is essential to ensure the safety of oneself and others on the road,” he said.
