Pune, 7th February 2025: In a groundbreaking initiative to involve the younger generation in urban traffic management, the Pune Traffic Police Department, in collaboration with Pune Platform for Collaborative Response (PPCR), Top Management Consortium Foundation (TMCF), and Jehangir Hospital, has launched the “Pune Traffic Mitigation Internship Program.”
This program, backed by the Commissioner of Police, Pune City, aims to provide college students with hands-on experience in traffic management, law enforcement, and urban mobility solutions.
The initiative was officially inaugurated today by Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar, with the presence of key dignitaries, including Manoj Patil (Additional Commissioner of Police, East Regional Division), Dr. Sudhir Mehta (Chairman, Pinnacle Industries Ltd & EKA Mobility), Mukesh Malhotra (Managing Director, Weikfield Products Co), Ajay Agarwal (My Page Pune), and Nishit Kamat (Transportation System Strategist and Designer for Pune Traffic Mitigation Initiative). The
first batch of interns were felicitated on the occasion.
This internship provides students with an in-depth understanding of traffic challenges, policy implementation, and the integration of technology in traffic management. Participants will be educated on how cities are planned, the role of smart technologies like Google Maps, CCTV surveillance, and Adaptive Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), as well as the impact of 32 arterial road improvement projects currently underway in Pune.
As part of the program, students visited various divisions within the Pune City Traffic Police Department, including Planning, Administration, CCTV, Multimedia, Computer, and Reader sections. This gave them a first-hand look at the different facets of traffic management and law enforcement.
They were also taken to Sinhagad Road’s ATMS center, where they learned about real-time traffic monitoring, accident prevention, and intelligent traffic control systems designed to improve travel reliability and safety.
To understand the real-life application of traffic regulations, students were taken to a busy intersection in Pune, where they witnessed law enforcement in action. Police officials demonstrated how they take action against traffic violations such as:
✔ Fancy number plates
✔ Overspeeding
✔ Triple-seat riding on two-wheelers
✔ Driving in the wrong direction
Students were also briefed on the role of CCTV surveillance, the e-challan system, towing machines, speed guns, and interceptor vehicles in ensuring road safety and enforcing traffic laws.
An important highlight of the program was a first-aid training session conducted by Dr. Shyam Gaikwad from Jehangir Hospital. He educated students and police personnel on how to provide immediate medical assistance in case of road accidents, sudden cardiac arrests, and other medical emergencies. This session aimed to equip participants with life-saving skills that can be crucial in emergency situations.
More than 70 students from prestigious institutions, including Lexicon MILE, Symbiosis School of Economics, Cybage and Indira School of Business Studies, are actively participating in this initiative.
The program is being successfully implemented under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende, along with Police Inspectors Runal Mulla and Sunil Gawli, and PSI Raghatwan.
Speaking about the initiative, Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar stated, “This program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical knowledge about traffic enforcement and urban mobility challenges. By understanding the root causes of traffic issues, they can contribute to smarter city planning and traffic solutions in the future.”
Dr. Sudhir Mehta, Chairman of Pinnacle Industries Ltd & EKA Mobility, added, “Educating young minds on urban mobility is the first step towards creating efficient, technology-driven traffic solutions. Their fresh perspectives can help reshape how cities approach traffic planning.”
With growing traffic congestion and road safety concerns in Pune, initiatives like the Pune Traffic Mitigation Internship Program play a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering innovative solutions. By combining education, practical exposure, and law enforcement, this internship is expected to empower students with the knowledge and skills to contribute to a safer and smarter urban environment.
