Pune, 1st March 2023: The application process for the vacant post of Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has been reopened with a new deadline of March 30. This is the second time the application process has been initiated after the previous process was suspended. The post of Vice-Chancellor has been vacant since May 2022 after the end of Dr. Nitin Karamalkar’s term. Dr. Karbhari Kale, the Vice-Chancellor of Babasaheb Ambedkar Technical University, was temporarily appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University.

The selection process for a new Vice-Chancellor was stalled due to the Governor’s disapproval of the changes made by the Mahavikas Aghadi government in the University Act. After the transfer of power in July 2022, the state government scrapped the proposed changes to the University Act and appointed a Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee in September. However, the state government later announced that the Vice-Chancellor selection process would be carried out according to the decision of the University Grants Commission, resulting in the suspension of the application process.

Recently, a new committee including a representative of the UGC has been appointed, and they have invited applications for the post of Vice-Chancellor for the second time. Eminent educationists are eligible to apply for the position, and nominations of suitable candidates can also be sent to institutions. The deadline for applications is March 30.
