Pune, January 11, 2021: The Maharashtra state government has formed a committee to examine the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016. The expenses for this committee will be borne by the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Surprisingly the Vice-Chancellor of SPPU was not included in this committee.

The members of the university’s senate expressed their displeasure about it. In the recent meeting, member Dr Sanjay Kharat presented a proposal expressing views regarding University Act revaluation.

A discussion was held on this topic during which member Dr Kanhu Giramkar said, “The SPPU has time and again proved its calibre and implemented various quality programs. But not a single SPPU member is included in the committee. State government must at least include the Vice-Chancellor in this committee.”

Prasenjit Phadnis asked if no member from SPPU is part of the committee, then why should SPPU bear the expenses? Rajeev Sabde also demanded inclusion of Vice-Chancellor in the committee. Bageshri Manthalkar criticised the committee stating that the members are staying in 5-star hotels instead of using the university’s guest house.

Meanwhile, committee member Amit Patil said that the senate members must be careful while making statements. This could lead to differences between the university and the government.
