Pune: Unplanned Sewage Work Causes Traffic Chaos in Viman Nagar, Citizens Demand Action

Viman Nagar, 13th March 2025: Residents of Viman Nagar are facing severe inconvenience due to unplanned and haphazard sewage pipeline work, which has left major roads and intersections dug up, causing traffic congestion and delays.
In an email addressed to Vinayak Shinde, Deputy Engineer, Sewerage Department, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and other senior PMC officials, Qaneez Sukhrani, Convenor of the Viman Nagar Citizens Forum, highlighted the growing distress among residents.
“We greatly appreciate the initiative to lay new sewage lines with increased diameter to accommodate the rising population. However, the work is being carried out without a proper plan, leading to chaos on the roads,” Sukhrani wrote.
She pointed out that despite meeting officials on February 13, 2025, to discuss the ongoing work, there has been no clear schedule for different phases such as connections, chamber work, leveling, and reinstatement. Even after seeking an update from Kotwal, Junior Engineer, no response was provided.
“Trenching and road closures are happening simultaneously across all roads and chowks, making it extremely difficult for commuters. At peak hours, it takes nearly half an hour to cross any chowk, and today, a major road at a busy intersection has been completely dug up,” Sukhrani added, urging PMC to personally monitor and streamline the process.
Citizens are now calling for immediate intervention from PMC officials to ensure a well-planned execution that minimizes disruption while completing the crucial infrastructure upgrade.
