Yeolewadi, 16th October 2023: Apang Leprosy Punarvasan Va Yuvak Sangathan Antulenagar, a non-governmental organization committed to aiding individuals affected by leprosy, has issued an urgent appeal to address the severe and immediate challenges facing this marginalized community.

“Leprosy is a debilitating disease that attacks nerve endings, rendering patients unable to feel pain. It leaves them susceptible to ulcers and infections, and without proper treatment, can result in the loss of fingers, hands, toes, and feet. It may also lead to blindness, facial disfigurement, and severe hand and foot deformities,” stated Satish Sawant, President of Apang Leprosy Punarvasan Va Yuvak Sangathan.

The struggle against leprosy goes beyond mere medical treatment; it requires a holistic approach that tackles pressing social issues. A chief concern is the persistent social stigma encountered by those living with the disease, manifesting as isolation, discrimination, and denial of basic human rights.

Sawant further elaborated, “At the core of these challenges is a critical water crisis. Already disadvantaged by poverty, neglect, and impaired bodily functions, these individuals face the additional burden of insufficient water supplies. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s failure to provide an adequate amount of water and maintain suitable water pressure in their taps exacerbates their plight.”

It is crucial to highlight that over 350 individuals have resided in this area since 1970 and have faced tremendous hardships just to survive.

“Is society doing enough to acknowledge their humanity and offer them the dignity they so richly deserve? We call upon all members of the press to join us in drawing attention to this vital issue. Together, let us ignite a movement that not only battles leprosy but also advocates for the rights, dignity, and well-being of those severely affected. Let’s give leprosy patients a human face,” concluded Sawant.
