Pune: Vaishnavi Hagwane Death Case: NCP Leader Rajendra Hagawane And Son Sent To Police Custody Till May 28; Investigation Underway

Pune, 23rd May 2025: In the Vaishnavi Shashank Hagawane death case, Pune Police today (23rd May) arrested Rajendra Hagawane and his son, Sushil Hagawane, after they had been on the run for several days. The duo was presented before a magistrate’s court the same day. The court has remanded both accused to police custody until 28th May. Vaishnavi, a daughter-in-law of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-Ajit Pawar Faction) leader Rajendra Hagawane, died by suicide at her residence, allegedly driven by sustained mental and physical harassment from her in-laws.
Earlier in the case, Vaishnavi’s husband Shashank Hagawane, her mother-in-law Lata Hagawane, and sister-in-law Karishma Hagawane were also taken into custody and are currently under police remand until 26th May.
Public prosecutor Shivam Nimbalkar, representing the complainant, stated that this was the first police custody hearing for Rajendra and Sushil Hagwane. “The investigation is still at a preliminary stage. Key evidence remains to be collected, and the police are probing who else might have aided the accused,” Nimbalkar added further.
Citing these grounds, the prosecution sought police custody, which the court granted for a five-day period to allow further investigation into the circumstances leading to Vaishnavi’s death.
