Viman Nagar, 10th August 2023: The Viman Nagar Citizens Forum, led by Convenor Qaneez Sukhrani, has raised concerns over the worsening traffic congestion in Viman Nagar and VIP Airport Road in Pune. In a press release issued today, the forum highlighted the challenges posed by the growing population and inadequate traffic management systems in the area.

Solutions to alleviate the traffic congestion have been repeatedly submitted to Vijaykumar Magar, DCP Traffic, discussed with Rajkumar Shere, senior PI Planning, and site visits have been conducted with Idekar, Senior PI Vimantal Traffic Division, according to the press release.

The Viman Nagar Citizens Forum emphasizes that the proposed solutions are citizen-friendly and straightforward, and they should have been implemented by the Traffic Police long ago to spare residents and citizens from unnecessary hardships. The forum has expressed its commitment to monitoring the implementation of these solutions and ensuring that the Police take the necessary steps to make Viman Nagar and VIP Airport Road congestion-free.

The press release points out that implementing one-way routes may not be a viable solution due to the lack of manpower for effective monitoring in a city where rule-following can be inconsistent.

Key recommendations outlined in the press release include:

  1. Installation of traffic signals at strategic junctions within 15 days, including the Dorabjee Chowk crossroad and the GoldCoast & Symbiosis School T-junction on VIP Airport Road.
  2. Deployment of traffic wardens during morning and evening peak hours until signals are installed.
  3. Strict enforcement of ‘No parking / no halting’ rules along VIP Airport Road, particularly targeting private taxicabs and vehicles around Sanjay Park slums.
  4. Crackdown on private taxicabs causing congestion on the diagonal road from VIP Airport Road to 509 chowk.
  5. Ensuring proper functioning of existing traffic signals at Gangapuram Chowk and Datta Mandir Chowk during peak hours.
  6. Implementation of P1/P2 parking zones on congested routes and consideration of making certain roads one-way to ease congestion.
  7. Ban on parking for commercial vehicles and private vehicles on public roads.
  8. Relocation of hawkers and vendors to designated zones, with specific suggestions provided to the Pune Municipal Corporation.
  9. Removal of debris, garbage, and obstructions from footpaths and roads to ensure smooth traffic flow.
  10. Monitoring and regulation of driving schools, vehicle repair units, abandoned vehicles, and auto rickshaw stands.
