Viman Nagar, 17th June 2023: Frustrated by the persistent water supply issues plaguing their area, residents of Viman Nagar staged a “Rasta Roko” protest at Datta Mandir Chowk today, holding the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) accountable for the inadequate water supply.

For the past four days, the residents have been grappling with a severe shortage of water, aggravated by leakages in the Bhama Askhed water pipeline.

A resident expressed his concerns, stating, “Water supply has been completely cut off in Konark Campus and the entire Viman Nagar area for the last four days. We are facing numerous difficulties as a result. We have repeatedly requested the PMC to address this issue, but unfortunately, we have yet to receive any response.”

During the protest, the residents demanded that the PMC promptly address the water supply problems and ensure an adequate and uninterrupted water supply. They also emphasized that if the PMC is unable to resolve the issue, alternative arrangements must be made by the corporation itself.

Advocate Aarti Sonagara, Founder and President of the Nagar Road Citizens Forum, highlighted the various challenges faced by Viman Nagar residents. She mentioned the wastage of water caused by leakages in the pipelines and the inability of private water tankers to provide water due to dried-up borewells. She further emphasized the plight of senior citizens, who are particularly affected by the water scarcity. Sonagara called upon the PMC to take immediate and concrete steps to address the pipeline leakages.

Arjun Jagtap, President of the Viman Nagar Residents’ Association, explained that the water supply in the entire Viman Nagar area has been disrupted for four days due to ongoing repair work at the Bhama-Askhed dam. However, PMC officials have assured the residents that the repair work has been completed, and the water supply will be restored soon.

Aniruddha Pawaskar, the head of the water supply department at PMC, clarified that repair work on the pipeline was undertaken on Thursday, necessitating the drying of the pipe. He assured the residents that efforts were being made to resolve the water supply issues as quickly as possible.

The residents of Viman Nagar hope that their protest will draw attention to their plight and prompt the PMC to take immediate action, ensuring a reliable and continuous water supply for their community.
