Pune, 10th June 2025: Pune continues to face a critical water supply shortage, especially in areas newly merged into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairman Prof. Ram Shinde has directed authorities to ensure immediate and adequate water supply to these newly included villages. The directive came during a meeting held on 10th June, at the Legislative Council, following concerns raised by MLC Yogesh Tilekar during the 2025 budget session.

Despite the launch of the 24×7 water supply scheme in 2018, neighborhoods such as Katraj, Kondhwa, Yewalewadi, and Pisoli are still suffering from insufficient water supply, leading to frequent public protests. The issue was discussed in detail at the meeting, which was attended by MLC Yogesh Tilekar, Legislative Secretary Dr. Vilas Athawale, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram (via video conference), Additional Commissioner Omprakash Divate, and Deputy Secretary for Urban Development Priyanka Chhapawale.

Currently, PMC has an agreement for 14 TMC of water. However, the council has recommended that while planning the water supply scheme for the 34 newly merged villages, the supply should be increased to 21 TMC. Both Prof. Ram Shinde and MLA Yogesh Tilekar emphasized the urgent need for serious planning and swift resolution of the water crisis, highlighting the inadequacy of the existing system and the necessity for immediate action to meet the needs of Pune’s growing population.
