Pune Water Supply Update: PMC Begins Piped Water Distribution in Mohammadwadi-NIBM Area
Mohammadwadi, 14th May 2026: As the May 15 deadline for commissioning the long-pending water supply project in Mohammadwadi draws near, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified pipeline laying and distribution works across the NIBM Annexe–Mohammadwadi belt.
According to PMC officials, the 23-km transmission pipeline network and all eight Elevated Service Reservoirs (ESRs) under the scheme have already been commissioned. A crucial 1.5-km distribution pipeline linked to the 3 ML Dorabjee Paradise ESR has also become operational.
PMC Additional Commissioner Pavneet Kaur had earlier stated that nearly 1.5 lakh residents of Mohammadwadi and NIBM Annexe were expected to begin receiving regular piped water supply by May 15 through the three overhead water tanks installed opposite Dorabjee Mall.
Officials said water distribution has already commenced in some areas ahead of the target date, with a phased rollout planned across the remaining localities over the coming weeks. PMC authorities claimed that nearly 95 per cent of the overall project has been completed, while the remaining distribution network work is being carried out on a war footing.
The long-delayed project, pending for almost a decade in several pockets, is expected to significantly reduce dependence on private water tankers in Mohammadwadi, NIBM and adjoining areas. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns over inadequate civic infrastructure despite rapid urbanisation and regular payment of water taxes.
PMC officials, however, admitted that certain local distribution connections, road restoration work and testing activities are still in progress.
The civic administration has also faced allegations of obstruction to pipeline work by vested interests, along with complaints from residents regarding allegedly high charges being demanded for individual water connections.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to bring major relief to thousands of households in the rapidly growing southern Pune suburbs that have long struggled with irregular water supply.
