Pune, 23rd March 2023: Wheelchair Basketball Association Maharashtra (WBAM) is a registered body since 07 March 2017 and has its office in Pune. The Association is working towards promoting Wheelchair Basketball Sport in Maharashtra. The main aims of the Association are to provide a sports platform for players with disabilities to integrate into the mainstream and to coach the players with a view to enhance their Wheelchair Basketball skills, so that these players could represent India and win laurels for the country.
The Maharashtra Men’s team, which was formed in 2014, has won all the six National Championships conducted so far (2014-2019). The players are mainly ex-Army personnel from the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) Khadki, Pune. The Maharashtra Women’s team, which was formed in 2017, has won the last two National Championships.
WBAM has an outreach of more than 60 players in various districts of Maharashtra and has organized many training camps for players over the last three years. At present, Wheelchair basketball practice sessions are conducted every Saturday in Mumbai and Pune. A team of dedicated coaches – Mr. Abraham Poulose, Captain Louis George Meprath, Ms Suvarna Limaye, Ms Meghna Munot and Mr. Rizwan Ansari, conduct the sessions.
To maintain a high standard of fitness as well as Wheelchair Basketball skills, players at the PRC practice every evening at 6 PM. WBAM is conducting Wheelchair Basketball matches at PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Bhandarkar Road on 25 and 26 March 2023. The matches aim to give the players much-needed match practice and also to select the Maharashtra Wheelchair Basketball teams to participate in the next National Championships, which are likely to be held in August 2023.
