Pune, 13th August 2026: A month after losing her husband in the Moshi waste depot tragedy, Sonali Gaikwad, wife of one of the nine workers killed in the incident, allegedly died by suicide at her residence on Wednesday evening.

Gaikwad’s husband, Nagesh Gaikwad, was among the nine workers who were buried under a massive mound of garbage that collapsed onto a building near the waste dump in Moshi, Pimpri-Chinchwad, on July 8.

According to police, Sonali allegedly died by hanging at her residence at around 7 pm on Wednesday. Police said the inquest has been conducted and the post-mortem process is underway.

“Sonali was the wife of Nagesh Gaikwad, who died in the Moshi waste depot accident. Further legal proceedings are underway and a case of accidental death has been registered at the MIDC Bhosari police station. No suicide note has been found,” a senior police officer said.

Police said a preliminary inquiry indicates that Sonali had been under severe mental distress following her husband’s death. She is survived by their two young daughters.

The deaths of both parents within weeks have left the two girls orphaned, prompting an outpouring of grief in the area.

The Moshi tragedy occurred on July 8 when a large mound of garbage collapsed onto a building near the waste dump, trapping several workers underneath. Nine workers died in the incident.
