Pune: Woman Beaten to Death in Suspected Phone Theft Case

Budhwar Peth, 13th February 2024: A woman fell victim to a brutal assault with a bamboo, resulting in her death, on suspicion of theft of a mobile phone in Budhwar Peth, Pune. The incident marks the second murder within two days in the locality.

The deceased has been identified as Varsha Shivaji Thorat, aged 25 and a resident of Parvati. Two individuals, Gaurav Raju Chaugule, aged 21 from Kasba Peth, and Abdul Mehboob Syed, aged 34 from Budhwar Peth, have been arrested by the Faraskhana police station in connection with the crime. The incident was reported by Anand Sonwane (30) of Budhwar Peth, to the Faraskhana police station.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Abdul Syed owns an Anda Bhurji Stall. Varsha Thorat was reportedly in the vicinity of Shrinath Theatre on Monday around noon, where she had gone to enjoy a cup of tea. It was during this time that she was subjected to a vicious beating with a bamboo, allegedly by the accused, on suspicion of theft of a mobile phone. Varsha succumbed to her grievous injuries before receiving medical attention, despite efforts by the police to rush her to the hospital.

Assistant Police Inspector Vaibhav Gaikwad is investigating the matter further.
