Pune: Woman defrauded for Rs 4 crores in online fraud

Pune, April 22, 2021: A 60-year-old woman duped of Rs 4 crores in online fraud by a stranger, whom she met on social media. The entire incident took place in Pune.

The complaint met the guy on social media and the two became friends. The accused told her that he had sent her an iPhone and to get it she would have to pay online. After making any assurance, the woman trusted him and deposited Rs 3,98,75,000 in various accounts. But neither the iPhone nor the money was returned. Upon realizing that she had been cheated, the woman lodged a complaint to cybercrime police.

According to the information received, the complainant is working in a high position in a company. She received a friend request on Facebook from a person from Britain. After that, the two started chatting. The accused asked for her mobile number. After that, both started chatting on WhatsApp. The accused acquired the woman’s trust. And told the elderly women that I’ve sent you an iPhone, jewelry, and foreign currency, and all these items are stuck in customs in Delhi. So to get these things she needs to deposit money to the bank, said the accused to the complainant.

After this, the woman deposited Rs 3,98,75,000 in 67 accounts of about 25 banks. But as soon as she realized that she had been cheated and she’s not getting an iPhone or any other item even after paying this amount, she rushed to the police and told all the facts. A case has been registered accordingly. The matter is being investigated.
