Velhe, 15th August 2021: A woman from Shaniwar Peth in Pune died after the car she was travelling in fell into Panshet dam water after a tyre burst. Her husband and son had a narrow escape, said Assistant Police Inspector Manoj Pawar of Velhe police station under Pune rural police.

The deceased has been identified as Samrudhi Yogesh Deshpande (33). Her husband Yogesh Deshpande (35) and their nine-year-old son have survived.

According to police, the incident took place around 2 pm near Kadve, about 45 km from Pune, on Pune-Kuran-Velhe road. The three members of the family had gone sightseeing in the Panshet area. They had halted for snacks at a hotel near Kuran. They went towards Kadve around 2 pm.

Yogesh was driving the car while his son was sitting beside him. Samrudhi was sitting in the backseat. They were going beside the dam water when their car’s tyre burst and Yogesh lost balance on the wheel. The car veered into the dam water. Yogesh and his son managed to come out as the window glasses were rolled down. However, the backseat window glasses were closed and Samrudhi could not come out. The car was floating for some time and then dived in.

After hearing a loud noise, Vaibhav Jagde, Akshay Jagde and Aditya Lonare who were in a nearby hotel, rushed to the spot alongwith Namdev Katkar, who does fishing in the dam water. Vaibhav took a rope from the hotel and jumped into the water. He tied the rope to the car’s tyre and tied it to a tree, so the car didn’t reach the bottom. He tried to get Samrudhi out of the water through the front door window but he could not. He smashed the rear window glass of the car and pulled Samrudhi out.

She was rushed to a private hospital in Panshet. However, she had died before treatment could begin.
