Pune: Woman Engineer Allegedly Dies by Suicide Amid Harassment by In-Laws
Uruli Kanchan, 27th January 2026: In a tragic incident, a married woman engineer allegedly died by suicide in Pune district, reportedly due to continuous harassment by her in-laws.
The deceased, identified as Dipti Magar Chaudhari, ended her life by hanging at her residence in Sortapwadi near Uruli Kanchan. Following a complaint by her family, police have registered a case against her husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, and brother-in-law.
According to police, Dipti reportedly took her life in the presence of her three-year-old daughter. Her parents alleged that she faced persistent mental and physical harassment from her in-laws. The complaint names her husband Rohan Chaudhari, mother-in-law Sunita Chaudhari, father-in-law Karbhari Chaudhari, a school teacher, and brother-in-law Rohit Chaudhari.
Dipti and Rohan had been married for seven years. Her family stated that they had provided 50 tolas of gold at the time of marriage, along with ₹10 lakh in cash and ₹25 lakh for a car. After the wedding, Dipti was allegedly subjected to harassment over multiple issues. The complaint claims that her husband often questioned her character and insulted her by saying she was not attractive and incapable of managing household responsibilities.
The harassment reportedly escalated after Dipti gave birth to a daughter five years into the marriage. Her in-laws were allegedly displeased as she delivered a girl child. Later, when she became pregnant again, the complaint alleges that she was pressured to undergo sex determination tests. When the foetus was found to be female, she was reportedly forced to undergo an abortion at five months.
Police officials stated that a detailed investigation is underway based on the family’s complaint. Further action will be taken after recording statements and collecting evidence.
