Karvenagar, 23rd February 2026: Police investigations have revealed that a software professional detained for allegedly attacking her elderly grandmother during a failed robbery attempt had earlier carried out thefts at the homes of two other relatives, officials said.

The 31-year-old woman was taken into custody last week after she allegedly sprayed a chemical solution on her 75-year-old grandmother at the latter’s residence in Karvenagar in an attempt to steal valuables.

During questioning, investigators found that similar incidents involving family members had occurred recently in different parts of the city.

Senior Police Inspector Ulhas Kadam of Alankar police said the accused, who holds B.Tech. and MBA degrees and works at a major IT firm in Hinjewadi IT Park, had targeted elderly relatives living alone. He said that in one case on Sinhagad Road she allegedly stole around 15 tolas of gold from her maternal uncle, while in another incident in Kothrud she took valuables from a different relative’s house.

Police have issued her a formal notice directing her to cooperate with the ongoing investigation into the attempted robbery involving her grandmother. Kadam said the gold jewellery taken in the Sinhagad Road case has been recovered and returned after the family initiated steps to withdraw their complaint, leading to closure of that case.

Investigators suspect financial stress may have been a factor. The officer said she did not clearly explain her motive, but police believe she suffered major losses in share trading during and after the pandemic and may have tried to recover them through theft.

During questioning, she allegedly admitted choosing elderly relatives because they were less likely to resist or question her visits, Kadam said.
Her husband, who is also employed in the technology sector, told police he was unaware of her alleged actions and believed she was visiting relatives when she left home. The couple has a one-year-old child.

Police have registered offences against her under provisions related to robbery and theft, and further investigation is in progress.
