Pune: Work Begins on Ramwadi-Wagholi Metro Stretch, Traffic Management Emerges as Key Concern

Vimannagar, 5th September 2026: Preparatory work for the Ramwadi-Wagholi Metro extension has commenced, with barricading being installed near the Ramwadi Metro station on Nagar Road as authorities get ready to carry out geotechnical investigations and soil testing.

The upcoming Metro corridor is significant because it will feature a double-decker elevated structure. The Metro viaduct will run on the upper level, while a six-lane elevated road will be built below it, creating a combined transport structure along the busy Nagar Road corridor.

The first phase of the extension will cover approximately 4.7 km between Ramwadi and Tuljabhavani Chowk. Four stations are planned along this section — Vimannagar, Somnathnagar, Kharadi Bypass and Tuljabhavani Chowk.

According to Maha Metro officials, soil investigations and geotechnical surveys are expected to begin within the next few days. These studies will be followed by construction activities on the corridor. The Metro authorities had started the tendering process around four months ago to select an agency for executing the elevated road and Metro viaduct.

At present, Metro services terminate at Ramwadi. The new corridor will take off from the area immediately ahead of the existing station and largely follow the alignment of Nagar Road. A substantial portion of the proposed 4.7-km viaduct is expected to be constructed above the existing road.

However, the beginning of construction has raised concerns among regular Nagar Road commuters over traffic management. With barricading likely to expand as construction progresses, commuters have urged authorities to put in place a comprehensive traffic diversion and management plan well in advance.

Commuters said traffic movement between Yerawada and Wagholi is already affected by frequent wrong-side driving, congestion at major intersections and bottlenecks around U-turns. They said these existing problems could worsen if construction reduces the available road space without adequate traffic planning.

Residents and daily travellers have therefore called for traffic arrangements to be implemented alongside the Metro work to prevent additional congestion on one of Pune’s busiest eastern corridors.
