Pune: Yerawada-Katraj Twin Tunnel Pre-Feasibility Study Consultant to be Appointed Soon

Pune, 19th May 2025: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is in the final stages of appointing a consultant to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the proposed Yerawada-Katraj twin tunnel. The 20-kilometre infrastructure project is being planned to provide faster north-south connectivity across Pune and reduce traffic congestion on existing arterial routes.
“We have received bids from three different agencies for the pre-feasibility report. After detailed evaluation, we will finalize the most competent one to begin work on this crucial first step before preparing the detailed project report (DPR),” said PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase.
The upcoming study will assess multiple technical and environmental factors, including traffic flow patterns, geotechnical stability, topography, and hydrology. In addition to these, officials said the consultant will also evaluate the project’s social and environmental impact, conduct public consultations, and outline a land acquisition plan.
Experts involved in the preliminary planning said the study would also cover tunnel engineering challenges, especially boring through hilly terrain, as well as safety protocols and design standards. The financial aspect will be thoroughly examined, including possible toll structures and the feasibility of implementing the project through various public-private partnership (PPP) models.
As per early estimates, the twin tunnel could cost approximately ₹400 crore per kilometre. The proposed structure will feature two separate tunnels, each facilitating traffic in opposite directions. Final design parameters, including alignment, entry and exit points, and overall cost, will be finalized during the DPR stage.
Officials indicated that easing congestion along Pune’s north-south corridor remains a key priority, and the Yerawada-Katraj tunnel is envisioned as a long-term mobility solution for the city’s growing population.
