Camp, 4th August 2025: The body of a youth was discovered on the roof of a storeroom at Chhatrapati Shivaji Market in the Camp area on Sunday afternoon, triggering panic among local vendors and residents. Police suspect the youth, identified as Dawood alias Shakir Sheikh, was strangled to death.

Dawood, who worked at a mutton shop in the market, lived with his wife at Nagpur Chawl in Yerawada. According to Lashkar police, his body was found on the roof of a storeroom near the Ganapati temple inside the market premises, which is managed by the Pune Cantonment Board.

The incident came to light after residents complained of a foul smell in the area. Police were called to inspect, and during their search, they discovered Dawood’s body with visible neck injuries. His body was later shifted to Sassoon General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

“The post-mortem report will confirm the exact cause of death. We have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter,” said Senior Police Inspector Girish Dighavkar of Lashkar Police Station.

The market area has long been plagued by safety concerns. Local traders and shoppers have often raised alarms over the increasing number of drug addicts and petty thieves loitering around. Incidents of bag-snatching and altercations among addicts have become common, despite a police post being located nearby.

Citizens and market vendors have once again urged police to take strict action against anti-social elements operating in and around the Chhatrapati Shivaji Market.

Further investigation into Dawood’s death is underway. Police are also examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and questioning individuals who might have interacted with the deceased before the incident.
