Pune, 3rd May 2025: In a remarkable show of civic responsibility, over 13,590 Pune residents have already paid Rs 49.06 crore in property tax to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) even before the official bills were dispatched on 1st May. Many citizens opted to pay online, matching last year’s amount, as PMC did not increase property tax rates this year.

Traditionally, the PMC sends property tax bills from 1st April, but this year the process was delayed to 1st May due to confusion over last year’s 40% concession and challenges in assessing new properties. Despite the delay, property owners anticipated little change in their dues and proactively cleared their payments, leading to an unexpectedly early boost in municipal revenue.

While PMC typically earns Rs 200-250 crore from property tax in April, this year’s late billing has caused some financial strain, as officials note the lost opportunity to earn interest and manage contractor payments sooner. The administration has faced criticism for the delay, but citizens’ prompt payments have accelerated tax collection.

The PMC aims to complete bill distribution and encourage timely payments by offering discounts of 5-10% for those who pay before 31st May. The administration is now under pressure to streamline its processes to avoid such delays in the future.
