Pune’s Birla Ganesh Temple in Talegaon: Tallest Ganesha Idol, Visitor Tips and Nearby Attractions

Talegaon Dabhade, 18th June 2025: Situated atop a hill along the old Pune-Mumbai highway near Talegaon, the Birla Ganesh Temple is home to Pune’s tallest idol, Lord Ganesha. The temple, also known as Shri Mangal Murti Morya, offers both pilgrims and tourists a tranquil haven. Located just 2 km from Prati Shirdi and around 35 km from Lonavala, it has become a popular destination for both pilgrims and tourists.
History and Architecture of the Temple
Inaugurated on 17 January 2009, the temple was established by the Birla family. The idol of Lord Ganesha, sculpted by Maturam Verma and Nareshkumar Verma from Pilani, stands at a height of 54 feet, placed on an 18-foot pedestal that spans 45 feet in width. These dimensions were carefully chosen to add up to the number 9, considered auspicious in Hinduism. Weighing approximately 1000 tons, the statue is constructed from cement and copper, and it faces east.
“The size of the Ganpati idol left me speechless. It’s not just about its height—there’s a divine energy you feel the moment you reach the top,” says Ramesh Khare, a frequent visitor from Pune.
The Climb and the Scenic Beauty
Reaching the temple requires climbing 179 steps. The effort is richly rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, especially stunning during the monsoon season when the hills are draped in lush greenery and mist.
Serenity Over Commercialization
Unlike many popular temples, the Birla Ganesh Mandir is not heavily commercialized.
“I love the calm here. There are no noisy vendors or overcrowding—it truly feels like a sacred space,” shares Anjali Shirsath, a visitor from Talegaon.
Though there are no food stalls within the premises, benches are available for visitors to rest and soak in the peaceful ambiance. Parking is available near the base of the hill at a nominal charge. However, the access roads are narrow, so drivers are advised to be cautious.
Timings, Entry, and Best Time to Visit
The temple remains open daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with no entry fee. While it is welcoming year-round, the monsoon season is especially ideal for enjoying the area’s natural beauty.
