Pune’s Busiest Airport Route to See Major Overhaul; Modern Aesthetics Planned
Pune, 9th December 2025: Passengers landing at Pune International Airport will soon enjoy a smoother and more spacious commute, as the key approach road is set for a major upgrade. The stretch from Nagpur Chawl to the airport entrance will be widened from 12 metres to 24 metres and developed to match international standards with modern aesthetics and improved traffic flow.
The project is being taken up through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds under the initiative of Pune MP and Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol. Work is expected to begin shortly.
Pune airport currently handles around 200–225 flights daily and has crossed one crore annual passengers. Despite this sharp rise in traffic, the approach road has remained narrow and frequently congested, causing inconvenience to travellers. Authorities said the widening and beautification of this crucial stretch has become essential to support current and future mobility needs.
To finalise the proposal, Mohol recently convened a joint review meeting with Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Road Department Head Aniruddha Pawaskar, City Engineer Prashant Waghmare, Airport Director Santosh Dhoke, and Air Force Group Captain Kuldeep Singh.
The approximately 3-km stretch had been stuck for years due to land issues involving the Indian Air Force and private owners. According to Mohol, those hurdles have now been resolved with necessary approvals granted and land acquisition cleared.
Key Features Planned
– Road expansion from 12m to 24m
– International-standard construction
– Dedicated pedestrian pathways
– Modern lighting and improved safety elements
– Ornamental plantations, fountains, street furniture
– Murals and sculptures highlighting Pune’s heritage, art, and culture
“This road is the first and last impression of Pune for air travellers,” Mohol said. “Visitors should feel welcomed when they arrive and leave with the essence of our city. With this vision, the work will begin soon and the upgraded stretch will become a new identity for Pune.”
Beyond ensuring smoother traffic movement, the redesigned route is expected to serve as a cultural and aesthetic gateway, offering travellers a preview of Pune’s rich legacy as they enter or exit the city.
