Undri, 13th April 2025: In a powerful show of civic unity, over 400 residents from Undri and Mohamadwadi staged a silent protest on Sunday evening, demanding immediate intervention from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) after decades of civic apathy.

The protest, organized by the Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF), highlighted the chronic lack of basic infrastructure in these fast-growing neighbourhoods—despite their inclusion under PMC limits, Mohamadwadi since 1995 and Undri since 2017.

From potholed roads and erratic water supply to clogged drains and traffic hazards, residents say they’ve been systematically ignored. Their key demands include a Development Plan for Undri, access to potable drinking water, a functional drainage system, encroachment-free roads, public transport, and essential safety infrastructure like streetlights and a fire station.

“I’ve lived in Nyati Estate for 20 years and watched this area deteriorate. We pay taxes but get nothing in return. What began as neglect has now become a matter of life and death—we’ve lost two residents to reckless driving. This is a wake-up call for the authorities,” said Deepa Cheema, Founder Director, MURWDF.

Residents also criticized the PMC for collecting high property taxes while failing to deliver even basic amenities. They accused political leaders of making empty promises election after election.

“What was once a peaceful and promising locality is now a case study in neglect. As a retired citizen, I sought peace and dignity—but instead, we are left unheard,” said Suniel Aiyer, Director, MURWDF and resident of Nyati Chesterfield Society.

“A mother died while dropping her child to school. A father of three lost his life during a morning walk. How many more lives must be lost before PMC acts? We’re not asking for luxuries—we’re demanding the basics,” said Sajeev Nair, resident of Nyati Serenity Enclave.

Despite multiple complaints to civic authorities and repeated appeals to elected representatives, residents said no concrete action has been taken. They warned that if their demands continue to be ignored, they will seek redress through legal channels.

Key demands of the residents:
A comprehensive Development Plan (DP) for Undri
Reliable, potable water supply
Safe, wide roads and pedestrian-friendly footpaths
Proper drainage and sewage infrastructure
Regular police patrolling
Public amenities such as parks, playgrounds, and community halls
Efficient public transport connectivity
Removal of hazardous encroachments, including high-tension poles and illegal stalls
Cleanliness and solid waste management
Streetlights on all major and internal roads
A fully equipped fire station
Environmental initiatives for a clean and green locality

With growing concern for life and safety, residents say silence is no longer an option.
