Pune, 19th January 2020: A vibrant cultural event organized by the Sub-Zonal Office Pune of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) unfolded at the Dnyaneshwar Auditorium of Savitribai Phule Pune University, offering 80 students from 20 countries an immersive experience into the rich tapestry of Maharashtra’s social, art, and culinary heritage.

Under the aegis of the Union Ministry of External Affairs, the program aimed to acquaint international students, studying in Pune, with the cultural and educational capital of the region. Raj Kumar, Director of ICCR Divisional, along with Program Officer Sanjeevani Swamy, ICCR Advisor Kalyani Salekar, Leena Adhav, and Vishwanath Kalyankar, inaugurated the event with the traditional lighting of the lamp.

Addressing the students, Raj Kumar emphasized the significance of the program in introducing the students to the cultural and educational essence of Pune. The event commenced with a traditional welcome, where students were adorned with turbans (feta) in the Maharashtrian style.

Dr. Supriya Shelar, an officer from ITDC, presented a documentary film, enlightening the students about Pune’s historical landmarks, educational institutions, and diverse culinary culture. The film showcased the contributions of revered figures such as Santshrestha Dnyaneshwar, Jagtguru Sant Tukaram, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Thorle Bajirao Peshwa, Mahatma Phule, Savitribai Phule, and Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve.

Prof. Dr. Yogeshwari Bhat engaged with the students, sharing insights into the cultural and spiritual traditions of India, elaborating on the biography of Maryadapurushottam Prabhu Shree Ramchandra.

A captivating cultural program unfolded, showcasing the art and culture of Maharashtra. Kalyani Salekar and her disciples, along with Suvarna Bagh’s disciples, commenced the event with a soulful Ganesh Vandana. The program featured mesmerizing performances, including Koli Dance, Pandharpur’s Wari Darshan, Mangalaguri Games, Gavalan, Lavani, Devi’s Gondhal, and the Glory of Maharashtra. The foreign students enthusiastically embraced and responded to the cultural offerings.

Raj Kumar extended felicitations to the dignitaries, while Yogesh Rangnekar moderated the program. Sanjeevani Swamy concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude for the successful celebration of Maharashtra’s vibrant cultural heritage.
