Pune’s PMPML E-Bus Services in Hinjawadi Hit by Charging Delays, Traffic Jams

Hinjawadi, 22nd June 2025: Passenger services at PMPML’s Maan-Hinjawadi depot have been severely impacted due to inadequate charging infrastructure for electric buses and persistent traffic congestion, resulting in trip cancellations and overcrowded buses.
While morning services operate relatively smoothly, the afternoon schedule suffers as 8 to 10 buses remain stuck at the depot, unable to recharge in time. As a result, several buses are either unable to commence their routes or are forced to halt mid-journey, causing major inconvenience to commuters.
The depot currently runs 32 electric buses, but traffic delays in the Hinjawadi area prevent many of them from returning for charging on schedule. Buses expected to arrive by 12:30 p.m. often reach as late as 2:30 p.m. A full recharge takes about two hours, but due to limited time and high demand, many buses are dispatched with only 40–50% charge, increasing the risk of them running out of power mid-route.
This situation has led to frequent delays, long wait times, and overcrowding, particularly during peak hours, as PMPML struggles to maintain consistent service levels amid operational challenges. Although e-buses offer an environmentally friendly solution, their efficiency is undermined by the depot’s limited charging capacity and poor turnaround times.
“We will investigate why buses are not being charged fully and whether there are any technical faults in the system,” said Deepa Mudhol Munde, Chairman and Managing Director of PMPML.
