Pune’s Traffic Revamp: 59 Locations Optimized to Reduce Jams
Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pune, 27th March 2025: Pune’s traffic congestion has significantly reduced by 53% in key areas, and traffic speed has increased by 10.44%, thanks to a series of strategic changes implemented by the city’s traffic police since September 2024. These improvements, aimed at easing congestion and enhancing vehicle movement, were highlighted by Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil in a press conference today.
Patil, accompanied by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende, Assistant Commissioner Nandini Vagyan, and Police Inspector Sunil Gavali, outlined how traffic modifications at 59 locations across the city have played a crucial role in resolving long-standing issues.
Major Traffic Reforms in Pune
Pune’s rapid expansion, fueled by urbanization, commercial growth, and rising vehicle ownership, has placed immense pressure on its road network. Recognizing the severity of the issue, traffic police, in coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), have undertaken large-scale interventions.
Among the most significant measures, congestion on Nagar Road and Solapur Road has been notably eased. Additionally, a 265-kilometer network of 33 major roads has been optimized through traffic engineering adjustments, such as:
Right turn closures at 15 locations
Road widening at 14 bottlenecks
Junction modifications at 7 points
Relocation of PMPML bus stops at 10 places
Encroachment removals at 7 critical sites
One-way traffic systems at 2 locations
Island removals at 2 sites
Shifting of private bus stops at 2 points
These interventions, backed by technical vehicle counts and road usage studies, have helped in increasing vehicle speed and reducing unnecessary stoppages, which were identified as major causes of congestion.
Identifying and Tackling Congestion Causes
Through an extensive review, the traffic department identified major congestion triggers, including:
Excessive vehicle flow
Reckless driving and road rule violations
Vehicles breaking down on busy roads
Inadequate traffic management in key areas
The department’s findings revealed that in just three months, 114 incidents of vehicle breakdowns led to severe traffic jams. Addressing such issues, along with optimized signal timings, better U-turn planning, and improved road markings, has contributed to smoother movement across the city.
Future Roadmap for Traffic Management
While the results of these initiatives have been promising, officials emphasized the need for continued efforts to further enhance Pune’s traffic situation. “Improvements have been made by considering congestion causes and planning errors. Technology-driven solutions have helped reduce jams, and with the cooperation of the PMC, we will continue working on traffic decongestion,” said Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police.
With traffic reforms yielding visible benefits, Pune’s commuters can expect sustained improvements in the coming months as authorities continue their mission to make the city’s roads safer and more efficient.
