Students Protest as Pune University Fails to Act Against Indecent Incident
Pune, 27th March 2025: A group of students at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) staged a protest after the university administration failed to take action against a young man who allegedly behaved indecently in front of a female student. Following her persistent demand for strict action, sources indicate that the university’s security department is now in the process of filing a police complaint against the accused. Meanwhile, police have detained one suspect.
This incident adds to a growing concern over women’s safety on the university campus, as cases of harassment and inappropriate behavior continue to surface. Just last week, a student who is also a police officer was accused of molesting a female student in one of the university departments. However, the matter was allegedly resolved internally, with the officer receiving only a verbal warning, as the victim chose not to file a formal complaint.
The latest case has once again raised serious questions about campus security, especially regarding the effectiveness of surveillance. SPPU has 1,236 CCTV cameras installed across the campus, but recent discussions in the state assembly revealed that over 100 cameras are non-functional. Lawmakers had urged the university administration to immediately repair and reactivate these cameras to ensure student safety.
With repeated incidents of harassment coming to light, students are demanding stricter action and improved security measures on campus. The lack of immediate response from university authorities in both recent cases has sparked frustration, prompting students to question the administration’s commitment to their safety.
