Market Yard, 18th June 2023: A devastating fire broke out in warehouses near Kakade Vasti on Gangadham Shatrunjay Mandir road on Sunday morning, resulting in the destruction of twenty-two warehouses containing various materials.

The fire, which began around 9 am, was finally brought under control after an arduous battle by over 100 personnel from the PMRDA and Pune municipal fire brigade. The firefighting efforts involved the use of twenty-two fire engines, ten tankers, and three JCB machines.

The warehouses housed a wide range of goods, including paint, chemicals, furniture, decorative items, glass, spare parts, biscuits, cement, moulding, and transport materials. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the nearby settlement, and the twenty-five transport trucks parked near the warehouses were saved from the inferno.

The intensity of the blaze caused thick smoke, visible from areas such as Bibvewadi, Kondhwa, and Market Yard, leading to a significant gathering of onlookers. Consequently, traffic congestion occurred from Gangadham Chowk to Shatrunjay Mandir road, prompting the traffic police to close one side of the road for safety reasons.

Devendra Potphode, the Fire Brigae Chief of Pune, expressed relief that no injuries or fatalities were reported during the incident. However, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown and requires further investigation.

Vikram Kshirsagar, Junior Engineer from the PMC’s Building Development Department, affirmed that action would be taken against unauthorized godowns once the authorization status is confirmed. The affected area falls under the jurisdiction of Bibvewadi, Kondhwa Yevlewadi, and Wanwadi zonal offices, where numerous unauthorized godowns have been erected on the hill slopes.

Despite repeated actions by the Municipal Corporation to demolish these unauthorized structures, they continue to be rebuilt, leading to frequent traffic congestion and accidents. This recent incident marks the fourth major fire in the area in the past three years.

Authorities are emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and ensure the safety of the local community.
