PWD Sets December 31 Deadline for Pune Grand Tour Road Works
Pune, 26th December 2025: The Public Works Department (PWD) has announced December 31 as the final deadline to complete roadworks across Maval, Mulshi, Bhor, Velhe, Saswad, Purandar, and Haveli talukas in preparation for the Pune Grand Tour — India’s first professional multi-stage cycling event — scheduled from January 19 to 23 next year.
Pune Collector Jitendra Dudi said the administration has been closely monitoring contractors responsible for the works. “The original deadline was December 20, but we have extended it to December 31. Strict instructions have been issued to ensure all work is completed ahead of the event,” he said.
PWD officials stated that nearly 90% of the work has already been finished. Bharatkumar Baviskar, Superintending Engineer of the PWD, noted that initial notices were issued to contractors who had delayed progress, warning of a penalty of Rs 1 lakh per day for further delays. “We are maintaining constant follow-ups with the contractors to ensure timely completion,” he added.
Authorities emphasised that the roads must meet the standards set by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the global governing body for professional cycling, as the event will host international riders.
Officials also highlighted the need for coordination with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to ensure uniformity across all race routes. A third-party agency has been proposed to conduct regular inspections and verify that the work aligns with UCI quality standards.
A senior PWD official said, “Completing these roads on time is crucial not just for the Pune Grand Tour but also for improving long-term infrastructure and connectivity across these key talukas. We are monitoring the progress daily and ensuring that all standards are met.”
The Pune Grand Tour will span multiple stages across varied terrain, testing riders’ endurance and skills while promoting Pune as a hub for professional cycling in India. Roadworks, including widening and resurfacing, aim to provide safe, smooth, and international-standard routes for all participants. Officials confirmed that the list of international participants has already been finalised.
