Pune July 24, 2020: Given the Coronavirus pandemic, the railway is now preparing to change the format of the train ticket. Instead of railway tickets, QR code will be introduced and its implementation is expected to start soon. After that paper ticket system may not be in practice.

Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav has said that currently 85 percent of tickets are being booked online. “In such a situation, our effort is to build a complete QR code system, so that everyone is safe”, said a railway official.

The Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) has launched a software application which will convert the reserved ticket details of the passenger into QR code. Railways will implement this system in all zones.

The QR code-based contactless ticket scanning system has been launched as a pilot project from June 1 at Prayagraj station of North Central Railway and now it will be implemented for reserved tickets across the country.

How it will work: During the entry or checking of the ticket at the station, the passenger will click on the QR code URL available in his SMS and the reserved ticket’s QR code will be displayed on the passenger’s mobile browser using the handheld terminal containing the application developed by CRIS. QR codes can be used for scanning.

All the details related to the presence of the passenger will be automatically updated in the application as soon as the QR code is scanned. Any QR code scanning app available in Google Play Store or iOS App Store etc. can be used for this purpose.
