Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is now Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award : PM Modi
Delhi, 6 August 2021: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will now be called Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. PM Modi said that he has taken this decision after the request of his countrymen.
The PM made this announcement through Twitter. This award is the country’s biggest sports honour. This award was given for the first time in 1991-92.
The PM wrote on Twitter, ‘We are all overwhelmed by the great efforts of Indian players in the Olympic Games. The willpower shown by our sons and daughters, especially in hockey, the zeal to win is a great inspiration for the present and future generations.”
He wrote in another tweet, ‘Amidst the moments that have made the country proud, the request of many countrymen has also come to the fore that the name of Khel Ratna Award should be dedicated to Major Dhyan Chand ji. Considering the sentiments of the people, it is now being renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Jai Hind!’
