Rare Celestial Event: Seven-Planet Alignment to Dazzle Night Sky on February 28

New Delhi, 21st February 2025: A spectacular celestial event is set to unfold on February 28, as all seven planets of the solar system—Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—align in the night sky, offering a rare visual treat for astronomers and stargazers alike.
This rare phenomenon follows the alignment of six planets—Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—which was visible between January 21 and January 29. Scientists note that such planetary alignments, where multiple planets line up on the same side of the Sun, do not happen frequently. The next opportunity to witness all seven planets together won’t come until 2040.
“These alignments occur when planets gather on one side of the Sun, making them visible simultaneously in the night sky,” explained Gerard van Belle, Director of Science at the Lowell Observatory in the United States, in a statement to Space.com.
Dr. Jenifer Millard, an astronomer and science communicator at Fifth Star Labs in the UK, emphasized the unique experience of witnessing such an event firsthand. “Sure, you can find breathtaking images of these planets online, but there’s something truly humbling about seeing them with your own eyes. It reminds us of our place in the vast universe,” she said.
Interestingly, the recent six-planet alignment coincided with the 45-day Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, which is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. However, the upcoming planetary parade will occur two days after the Maha Kumbh concludes on February 26.
The celestial alignment also holds special significance in Indian tradition. The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj takes place when Jupiter is in Aries while the Sun and Moon are in Capricorn, or when Jupiter moves to Taurus with the Sun in Capricorn. This year’s planetary alignment during the Maha Kumbh is an exceptionally rare occurrence, happening only once every 144 years.
With clear skies, space enthusiasts and casual observers alike will have the chance to witness this extraordinary alignment, marking a moment of cosmic wonder and scientific fascination.
