Reading Movement Should Be Increased for the Intellectual Advancement of Society: Prof. Dr. Vilas Adhav

Pune, 16th October 2023: India has a rich tradition of knowledge, and its saints have a legacy of literature. “Reading movement should be intensified for the intellectual upliftment of society. Basic knowledge is acquired primarily through reading books,” said Prof. Dr. Vilas Adhav, Director of the Lifelong Learning and Extension Department at Savitribai Phule Pune University. He urged all to draw inspiration from great personalities like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who was renowned for reading continuously for twelve hours at a stretch.

The statement was made during an event organized by Annasaheb Magar College to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The event was conducted in association with Savitribai Phule Pune University, the Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension, the Department of Marathi, and the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad (Hadapsar Branch). The event, called “Kavismelan,” was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Vilas Adhav and Dr. Nitin Ghorpade, Principal of the college and member of the management council of Savitribai Phule Pune University.

Renowned poets such as Chandrakant Wankhede, Ghazalist Arun Katare, Prof. Hanumant Bhawari, and student poets including Vijay Andhare and Pandurang Pawar, among others, presented poems.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s contributions in the field of science, especially in making India capable in areas like nuclear weapons, were acknowledged as an inspiration for the youth. Dr. Nitin Ghorpade emphasized that reading enhances both knowledge and personality.

“Poems are the very soul of society,” said renowned poet Chandrakant Wankhede, as various poets captivated the audience with their compositions.

The event also included Vice Principal Dr. Shubhangi Ooti, Head of the Marathi Department Dr. Praveen Sasane, and several other professors and around two hundred students.

Prof. Vandana Sonawale gracefully hosted the event, while Prof. Nitin Lagad proposed the vote of thanks. Prof. Dr. Nana Zagde coordinated the wonderful program.

The day concluded on a joyful note, with attendees carrying the poetic expressions in their hearts.
