Pune, 25th May 2022: The Rotary Club of Pune Baner has organized a walkathon, called Purplethon, on Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi at 7.30 am., with an aim to create awareness about and to raise funds for the epilepsy surgeries project currently being carried out by the Club.

The registration fees for the event are Rs. 250 only, which is open to all. The fees can be paid via payment details as displayed on the event poster.

Purplethon signifies the need to support and create awareness about the valuable epilepsy surgeries carried out by the Rotary Club of Pune Baner in association with the Epilepsy Centre at the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre, Pune. Dr Nilesh Kurwale, epilepsy surgeon and head of the Epilepsy Centre (Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre), is the Chief Guest for the event.

Purplethon, a walkathon, will take place inside the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports complex and will cover a 5 km route. The start and the finish points are inside the stadium premises with clear cut instructions along with hydration support for the participants. Each participant will be provided with a cap. The flagging off of the event takes place at 7.30 am. However, the participants are expected to be there by 6.45 am.

The club supports and funds epilepsy surgeries for the downtrodden and the needy. These surgeries are conducted by Dr Kurwale and his team. Each surgery costs approximately Rs. 2 lakh or above. These neurological surgeries are a life-changing experience for the patients, who, otherwise have to suffer an ordeal on account of epilepsy.

The quality of life of epilepsy patients and their families is appalling as the condition leads to unproductive, problematic living. Patients often suffer from bouts and attacks of fits and this leads to more physical damage. Plus, the medication given to these patients has long term side effects. Therefore, surgeries are needed to cure the debilitating condition.

The Rotary Club of Pune Baner has taken upon itself the yeomen task of supporting these epilepsy surgeries. Thus, to create awareness and to support the surgeries, the event of Purplethon holds great importance.
