RTO Corruption Protester Assaulted with Bamboo in Pune

Pune, 5th February 2024: An activist, engaged in a hunger strike protesting alleged corruption within the Regional Transport Office (RTO), was violently assaulted with bamboo. The Bundgarden police have registered a case against four individuals in connection with the assault.

The victim, identified as Ajay Popat Makhare, a 23-year-old resident of Sadguru Colony in Wakad, lodged a formal complaint at the Bundgarden Police Station. The accused have been identified as Nitin Pardeshi, Deva Khimsara, Vinod Jadhav, and an additional unidentified person. Makhare is associated with the All India Motorists-Owners Association and has been vocal about exposing corruption within the RTO.

The incident unfolded in front of the collector’s office, where Makhare initiated a hunger strike on Sunday (4th) in Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Udyan area. The motive behind the attack on the activist remains unclear at this time. Reports suggest that Makhare was confronted and assaulted when he questioned the accused about their decision to join the hunger strike.

The assault involved the use of a bamboo and another unidentified weapon. The Bundgarden police are investigating the case.
