Pune: Sassoon Administration Plans Super Speciality Hospital to Tackle Patient Overload

Pune, 17th January 2025: In response to the growing patient load, the Sassoon administration has proposed the establishment of a new super speciality hospital in Pune. The proposal, which includes advanced medical facilities and a focus on critical care, will soon be submitted to the Maharashtra State Government for approval.
Currently, super speciality treatments at Sassoon General Hospital are conducted in the Infosys building, but the facilities are proving insufficient to meet rising demand. The new hospital, with a proposed capacity of 250 beds, will include a dedicated intensive care unit with 50 beds. It will house departments for neurology, cardiology, nephrology, and plastic surgery. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce patient waiting times for these specialized treatments.
In addition to patient care, the hospital will support postgraduate medical education. BJ Medical College plans to introduce advanced courses in neurology, cardiology, urology, and plastic surgery. A proposal for the recruitment of doctors, nurses, and other support staff has also been included in the project.
Rajiv Nivatkar, Commissioner of Medical Education, also revealed plans for a dedicated cancer hospital in Pune. “A meeting with the District Collector will be held soon to finalize the location for the cancer hospital. Once the site is approved, a detailed proposal will be prepared and submitted to the state government for approval,” he said.
