Pune: PMC Approves Rs 3.79 Crore For CCTV Installation In Girls’ Schools As Safety Measure In First Phase
Pune, 17th January 2025: In a bid to enhance student safety, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved ₹3.79 crore for the installation of CCTV cameras in 300 municipal schools. The initiative will begin with 80 girls’ schools in the first phase. This decision was sanctioned by PMC’s Estimate Committee and will include schools within the city limits as well as in the 32 villages recently incorporated into PMC’s jurisdiction.
The move comes in response to rising concerns about student safety, particularly incidents of sexual assault on female students in schools across the state. Over 1.25 lakh students are currently enrolled in the 300 municipal schools under PMC.
A joint survey by PMC’s Electricity and Education Departments assessed the infrastructure of these schools, examining factors like the number of rooms, floors, open spaces, and entry points. The total estimated cost for CCTV installation in all 300 schools is ₹17 crore. However, due to budgetary constraints, the first phase of ₹3.79 crore will focus on girls’ schools, with provisions for remaining schools to be included in the 2024-25 budget.
