Satara Woman Who Earlier Had Triplets Gives Birth to Quadruplets
Satara, 16th September 2025: In a rare medical case, a 27-year-old woman who had previously delivered triplets became a mother of quadruplets—three girls and a boy—at the Krantisinha Nana Patil Civil Hospital in Satara on Friday evening.
Doctors said the babies were delivered through a Caesarean section in the 33rd week of pregnancy. Each newborn weighs between 1.3 kg and 1.4 kg, far below the normal birth weight of 2.5 to 3.5 kg, and all four are currently being kept in incubators. A full-term pregnancy usually continues until at least 38 weeks.
“The condition of the babies is stable for now. A team of nurses and doctors is continuously monitoring them,” said one of the attending doctors, adding that the mother had not been aware she was carrying quadruplets until labour pains began.
The woman has been identified as Kajal Vikas Khakardiya from Saswad in Pune district. She and her husband Vikas, both daily-wage construction workers, were already parents of triplets born five years ago. “Kajal was visiting her relatives in Koregaon when she started experiencing labour pains. A local physician conducted an ultrasound and detected the multiple pregnancy. She was then shifted to the civil hospital by ambulance,” another doctor explained.
Following detailed clinical assessment, the medical team decided to perform an emergency C-section because of the high-risk nature of the pregnancy.
Dr. Yuvraj Karpe, Civil Surgeon at Satara, said, “Kajal was only 33 weeks into her pregnancy. Quadruplet deliveries are extremely uncommon, with chances estimated at one in five to six lakh cases. She had earlier given birth to triplets—one boy and two girls. Such pregnancies can be risky, often leading to complications like anaemia in newborns and high blood pressure in the mother.”
Vikas, who rushed to Satara from Saswad when informed about the emergency, expressed gratitude to the hospital staff. “The doctors asked me to sign the consent form for the surgery. I just prayed that everything would go smoothly. Thankfully, the doctors and nurses are taking very good care of my wife and our babies,” he said.
