Savitribai Phule Pune University Awards Degrees to Over 93,000 Students at Landmark Ceremony

Pune, 5th December 2024: The 125th convocation ceremony of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the Iravati Karve Social Sciences Complex. The event highlighted the university’s strides in fostering excellence across diverse fields, including engineering, sciences, and social sciences.

Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog and Former Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saraswat emphasized the evolving challenges faced by contemporary scientists and engineers, urging the next generation to focus on sustainability and innovation.

Savitribai Phule Pune University is a beacon of academic excellence, contributing significantly to research in solar energy applications, agricultural biotechnology, and human healthcare. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities and dedicated faculty will empower young minds to address global and national challenges, said Dr. Saraswat. He further underscored the urgency of tackling climate change through renewable energy, eco-friendly industrial practices, and clean energy technologies to ensure environmental sustainability and future energy security.

The convocation was presided over by SPPU Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Suresh Gosavi, who presented a comprehensive progress report on the university’s achievements. The economy of the future is knowledge-driven, and education is the cornerstone for preparing youth to seize emerging opportunities. At SPPU, we are committed to evolving teaching, research, and education practices to align with the demands of the 21st century, Prof. Gosavi stated, appealing to students to contribute to India’s growth as a global leader.

Highlights of the Ceremony

Degrees Conferred: A total of 93,219 students were awarded degrees, including 73,113 undergraduate, 19,841 postgraduate, 93 diploma, 165 Ph.D., and 61 postgraduate diploma recipients.

Gold Medals: Twenty-eight gold medals were presented by Dr. Saraswat to students excelling in various academic fields.

Special Publication: A special convocation edition of Vidyapith Varta was unveiled during the event.

The ceremony witnessed the participation of key university officials, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Parag Kalkar, Acting Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Bhakere, Finance and Accounts Officer CMA Charusheela Gayke, and Director of Examination and Evaluation Dr. Mahesh Kakade. Other notable attendees included deans of various faculties, members of the Management Council, and professors.

Dr. Saraswat highlighted the role of education in addressing climate change, stating, The transition to renewable energy, climate-resilient infrastructure, and sustainable industrial practices must be prioritized. While India has made significant progress, more efforts are needed to accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy solutions.
