Pimpri, 5th December 2024: In a significant step towards addressing climate change and disaster preparedness, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The collaboration aims to improve climate monitoring, pollution management, and early warning systems for natural calamities, while also enhancing disaster response measures.

A key initiative under this agreement is the establishment of a cutting-edge X-Band Doppler Weather Radar tower at Durga Tekdi in Nigdi. The radar will enable real-time monitoring of weather changes and provide critical data on potential disasters like heavy rains, storms, and hailstorms. Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh and IMD Pune Chief Scientist KS Hosalikar recently inspected the identified site, where the radar system will be installed. The PCMC has allocated space for the project, which will be implemented by the IMD.

The MoU signing event was attended by PCMC officials, including Additional Commissioner Chandrakant Indalkar, Chief Security Officer Uday Jarande, Chief Disaster Management Officer Omprakash Bahiwal, Assistant Commissioner Umesh Dhakane, and Garden Superintendent Yogesh Walunj. IMD scientists, including Uday Shende, Dr. Shijo Zakaria, and Ashwin Raju DK, were also present.

Municipal Commissioner Singh highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating, “This partnership will play a vital role in planning and implementing structural measures against climate change and disasters, ensuring sustainable development for the city. The IMD’s expertise and data will guide the PCMC in preparing effective strategies to mitigate risks associated with extreme weather conditions.”

Under the agreement, the IMD will regularly provide weather forecasts and actionable insights to the PCMC, aiding in proactive decision-making. The X-Band Doppler Weather Radar system, with a working radius of 100 kilometers, will cover the entire Pune district, including Pimpri-Chinchwad and surrounding areas.

KS Hosalikar emphasized the radar’s capabilities, stating, “This indigenous system will provide precise real-time information on severe weather events, enabling timely responses to protect lives and property. The IMD will consistently share updates on atmospheric factors impacting Pimpri-Chinchwad to help the PCMC plan and prepare.”

With global climate change leading to an increase in natural and man-made disasters, this collaboration marks a crucial step in safeguarding the region’s future and enhancing the city’s resilience.
