Savitribai Phule Pune University Marks National Sports Day with Health Screening Camp
Pune, 29th August 2025: On the occasion of National Sports Day, the Department of Sports and Physical Education at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) organized a Fat Percentage and Body Mass Index (BMI) screening camp for students, teaching staff, and non-teaching employees on Friday.
The programme began with a floral tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as National Sports Day. The tribute and inauguration were led by Prof. (Dr.) Vilas Adhav, Director of the School of Education, and Dr. Sudam Shelke, Assistant Director of Sports.
The event saw the presence of Dr. Manmath Gharote, Director of The Lonavala Yoga Institute of India, along with Dr. Abhijit Kadam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports and Physical Education, Dr. Dadasaheb Dhengale, Dr. Yogesh Awhad, Office Assistant Shri. Deepak Ghole, and students of the department.
The screening camp aimed to spread awareness about the importance of fitness and healthy living among the university community. Participants underwent BMI and body fat percentage checks, reinforcing the message that “health is the best wealth.”
The university officials emphasized that National Sports Day is not only a tribute to Dhyan Chand’s contribution to Indian hockey but also a reminder for everyone to adopt a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise, sports, and yoga.
