Pune, 10th January 2024: In a significant development, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), formerly known as the University of Pune, has introduced updated regulations for the award of Ph.D. degrees. The move comes in alignment with the University Grant Commission’s latest guidelines, the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2022, replacing the previous UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of M.Phil / Ph.D Degrees) Regulation, 2016.

The decision to prescribe minimum standards and procedures for Ph.D. degrees was approved by the Academic Council of the University during its meeting on December 20, 2022. The newly established standards are applicable to University Departments, Research Centres at affiliated colleges, recognized institutions, and recognized research institutions, ensuring uniformity across the academic spectrum.

Prof. (Dr.) Suresh Gosavi, the Vice-Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, invoked the authority vested in him under Sub-section 8 of Section 12 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, to issue the following directives:

1. The Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degrees, outlined in the Annexure, will take effect from the academic year 2023-24 onwards.
2. This order is applicable to University Departments, Research Centres at affiliated colleges, recognized institutions, and recognized research institutions affiliated with the University.

The directive remains in force until the formal Ordinance, in compliance with the provisions of Section 74 of the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, is established.

This strategic move by Savitribai Phule Pune University aims to enhance the academic rigor and maintain high standards in the pursuit of Ph.D. degrees, aligning with the evolving landscape of higher education.
