Savitribai Phule Pune University Witnesses Decline in Global Rankings; Mumbai University Surges

Pune, 10th November 2023: Savitribai Phule Pune University, renowned as the Oxford of the East, has witnessed a significant decline in the QS World University Rankings. In the latest rankings, the university, which occupied a position in the 500 to 541 group last year, has now been pushed to the 711 to 720 group. This ongoing downward trend raises academic concerns, emphasizing the need for introspection and improvement.

The QS World University Ranking holds global significance, with universities evaluated based on criteria such as sustainability, employment generation, and international research collaboration. The outcome reflects the university’s standing on the world stage.

Contrastingly, the University of Mumbai has witnessed a substantial improvement in its ranking, rising by nearly 500 places. Last year, the university was placed in the 1000 to 1200 group, and this year it has secured a position in the 751 to 760 group. Mumbai University has also earned the 67th spot in the Asia ranking, showcasing notable progress.

Notably, India has surpassed China in the world university rankings, boasting the highest number of higher education institutions for the first time. India is represented by 148 institutes, while China has 133 institutes included in the list. This achievement underscores the growing recognition of Indian educational institutions on the global stage.
