Scorching April Heat Grips Pune, Lohgaon Sizzles at 43.6°C

Pune, 23rd April 2025: Summer temperatures have soared well above normal across Pune, with Lohgaon witnessing the hottest day of the season so far at a blistering 43.6°C on Wednesday. Other parts of the city also reeled under extreme heat, with Koregaon Park registering 41.7°C and Shivajinagar touching 41.2°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Meteorologists attribute the sharp rise in mercury levels to persistent atmospheric conditions over Maharashtra. An official from the IMD explained, “A stable anticyclonic system is dominating much of the region, leading to sinking air masses. This descending air compresses and warms up, which in turn limits cloud development and intensifies sunlight at the ground level.”
The official added that while northwesterly winds are blowing across the state, they are not currently strong enough to bring any relief. “These winds are not significantly influencing the surface temperatures right now,” the official noted.
The weather department has cautioned that the heatwave-like conditions are likely to continue in the coming days. “As the anticyclonic pattern is expected to persist, the clear skies and dry conditions will likely remain unchanged, keeping daytime temperatures high,” the official warned.
Residents have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
