Pune, 1st April 2023: The position of Vice-Chancellor at Savitribai Phule Pune University has been vacant since last year when the tenure of Former Vice Chancellor Dr Nitin Karamalkar ended in May 2022. However, the process to fill the position is now underway. The university had opened the application process until March 30, and 16 candidates have shown interest in the position.

The Vice-Chancellor selection process had been stalled due to the Mahavikas Aghadi government’s changes to the University Act, which were not approved by the Governor. However, the current state government canceled the proposed changes in the University Act. In January 2023, Mumbai University and Savitribai Phule Pune University formed the Vice-Chancellor Selection Committee and released an advertisement for the position.

The committee, chaired by Former President of All India Technical Education Council Dr Anil Sahastrabuddhe, includes Dr Abhay Karandikar, Deepak Kapoor, and Dr Meena Chandavarkar as members. Eligible candidates from the applications will be interviewed in April, and five candidates will be selected for the final interview with the Vice-Chancellor. One candidate will be selected for the Vice-Chancellor post.

Dr Karbhari Kale, the Vice Chancellor of Babasaheb Ambedkar Technical University, has been entrusted with the additional charge of the Savitribai Phule Pune University since the position has been vacant. The University aims to select a competent and deserving candidate for the Vice-Chancellor position through a transparent selection process. The committee is expected to take into account the academic credentials and experience of the candidates during the selection process.
