‘SHILP KATHA 2016’ – Annual event of Symbiosis Institute of Design on Crafts

Date – 24th and 25th February 2016

The annual Craft Sustenance initiative titled Shilpkatha scheduled on 24th and 25th February, 2016 at the Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID) campus, Viman Nagar.

The objective of this event is to conserve and bring out a product diversification of heritage Indian crafts.

Students from all disciplines have explored crafts from Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and so on and have given contemporary touch. This will be exhibited in the exhibition at the SID.

Some of the crafts covered are Bagh Printing & Batik from Madhya Pradesh, Himroo, Sawantwadi Toys, Copper Ware, Warli Painting and Paithani from Maharashtra, Pochampally of Andhra Pradesh.

As an extension to this activity, from this year there will also be seminar and panel discussion on theme, ‘Crafts: Tradition, Design, Education and beyond’.

Ms. Ritu Sethi– Chairperson of craft revival trust- “Future of Indian Crafts”,

Ms. Megha Agarawal Maheshwari–  Founder Director- Crafting Nuru,  ‘Empowerment of craftsmen”,

Ms. Sharmila Nagraj– Director- Woxen School of arts and Design  “Craft revival and sustenance”,

Ms. Avani Varia– Director- Aadhar Heritage Film Festival , “craft documentation and revival”

The schedule for the program is as follows:

Day 1: 24th Feb, 2016

Venue: Exhibition Area, Symbiosis Institute of Design

Inaugural Addresses: 11:00 am to 12:00 noon.

Craft Demonstrations: 12:00 noon onwards till 5:00 pm.

Day 2: 25th Feb, 2016

Venue: Seminar Hall, Symbiosis Institute of Design

Welcome Address: 10:30 am

Seminar and Panel Discussion: 10:45 am to 1:00 pm

Screening of Student’s Films: 1:45 pm to 2:20 pm

Heritage Film Festival: 2:20 pm to 5:30 pm
