Pune, 19th December 2025: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena (Shinde group) have initiated preliminary discussions on seat sharing for the upcoming Pune Municipal Corporation elections. According to initial reports, the talks will focus only on seats currently held by opposition parties.

The BJP has decided to retain the 105 seats it won in the previous civic elections, while seat-sharing discussions with the Shiv Sena will cover the remaining wards. This was confirmed in a meeting held on Thursday between senior leaders of both parties.

Sources indicated that under the proposed arrangement, the Shiv Sena is likely to get around 20 to 22 seats. The BJP has asked the Shiv Sena to submit its proposal outlining the seats it wishes to contest.

The meeting was attended by senior leaders, including Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol and Shiv Sena MLA Vijay Shivtare. Discussions touched upon potential candidates and ward-wise allocations, but no final decisions were taken.

It was clarified that seats previously won by the BJP will not be part of the discussions. Another point under consideration is giving preference to the party that had finished second in a ward during the last election.

Currently, the Shiv Sena has only three former corporators, after five of its previous members joined the BJP, which is expected to influence its share in the alliance.

Speaking after the meeting, Mohol described the talks as positive and said a final decision is expected after one or two more meetings. Shivtare added that negotiations would focus on the 50 wards held by opposition parties, with candidates to be finalised through mutual agreement.
